Innovator Founder Visa in 2026: what endorsing bodies really look for

The UK Innovator Founder Visa replaced the old Innovator and Start-up routes — and the bar for endorsement has risen meaningfully in 2026. Founders we work with often arrive with a polished business plan that would have sailed through two years ago, only to be turned away today. This article explains why, and what to do instead.

The three magic words

Endorsing bodies assess your business across three criteria: innovative, viable, and scalable. Each word has a precise meaning and each one has to be evidenced — not asserted.

Innovative

Your idea must offer a genuinely new product, service, or business model. "An app for X but better" is not innovative. "An AI agent that does Y, which has not previously been possible" is.

  • Show what is new about your offering versus the market.
  • Demonstrate a meaningful technological or methodological angle.
  • Document why competitors cannot easily copy you.

Viable

Viability is about real demand, real revenue paths, and a real founder who can execute.

  • Customer interviews, not customer assumptions.
  • Pricing tested with at least signed letters of intent or paying users.
  • Founder track record and skills mapped to the job at hand.

Scalable

The business must be able to grow beyond a sole-trader operation, ideally creating jobs in the UK economy.

  • A clear path to multi-million GBP revenue.
  • A team plan with realistic UK hiring milestones.
  • Defensible margins and a market large enough to support that growth.
If you cannot evidence each criterion with documents, data and external validation, your application is fragile.

Common reasons applications fail

The most frequent reasons we see applications rejected:

  1. The "innovation" is essentially a feature, not a defensible position.
  2. Customer demand is asserted rather than evidenced.
  3. The founder's relevant experience is unclear.
  4. Financial projections look optimistic and unanchored.
  5. The path to scale is just a slope on a chart, not a real plan.

How Realtouch helps

We support founders end-to-end: eligibility check, business plan, evidence pack, founder positioning, and endorsing body submission. Most importantly, we stress-test every claim before the body sees it.
